Bear Mountain Hiking
This hike is a real bear of an effort to make. We’d only recommend this strenuous trail to experienced hikers of good fitness who are willing to rough it through for a worthwhile view at the summit.
Though the trail is only about 4.5 miles in length, the nearly 2,000 foot gain and elevation along the way makes for a steep test. The trail is greatly unshaded throughout its narrow rocky switchbacks, so be sure to bring plenty of water and sun protection. While taking breaks is always recommended, be wary of getting your hopes up for an early end— for Bear mountain has a handful of false summits that’ll make the experience feel like it’s dragging on far more than it needs to.
Don’t let the warnings of the trail’s difficulty completely scare you off, though. Once you’re at the true summit, you’re graced with a panoramic view of northern Arizona’s varied beauties. The formations and buttes of Sedona lay at your feet, while the lush Mogollon Rim is just as visible as snow covered San Francisco peaks or Jerome’s ghost town in the distance
