Colorado River Kayaking
The Colorado River has much to offer for kayakers of all levels as it winds through Arizona. Two of its most popular stretches are through Glen Canyon and where it connects to Lee’s Ferry, the entrance to kayaking through the entire Grand Canyon. Both are popular with touring companies, but offer wildly different experiences.
Glen Canyon is an easy enough paddle for beginners, taking you through beautiful canyon scenery between Lake Powell and the Grand Canyon itself. The picturesque and often photographed view of Horseshoe Bend might be lost upon you if you’re not perceptive though, as you’ll be deep within the scenery rather than looking into it from far above.
Once Lee’s Ferry is reached, a permit is required to continue— and the lucrative opportunity to kayak through the Grand Canyon is determined by random lottery. This trip is only for the most experienced kayakers, as the Colorado River through the canyon continues up to Class V rapids and various Class IV’s that’ll test your abilities. If you can accomplish it though, this is a true bucket list activity you’ll never forget.
